The Monterey Peninsula's rich past and present are tied together through a two century old secret and the legacy of Robert Louis Stevenson in this complex mystery/thriller. The Stevenson Plan delves beyond the well-known images into the history and culture of this unique corner of the world. FBI Agent John Gibson finds himself re-assigned to investigate a mesmerizing heist from the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank that leads him to one of the oldest cities on the West Coast. A second story set in the year 1818, when Monterey was the capital and jewel of Spanish Alta California, unfolds involving a gold chest, a conniving Russian explorer, and a threatening French pirate. A convoy departs on a journey to Monterey from Baja California. The expedition confronts a myriad of complications along the trail and carries with it a secret only known to a Franciscan friar. The friar must reach Monterey before it is destroyed and he lets nothing deter his mission, even if he must act in defiance of his vows.

From this well-traveled author, M. Bryce Ternet takes his readers from a heist in 2009 to Father Dominique Margil in 1818. The Stevenson Plan is an interesting play on words since number one, Samuel P. Beckwith, named the heist after the author of his favorite book, Treasure Island. Though he has inherited wealth, Samuel lost a lot during the market crash and he wasn’t about to live a less privileged life, hence the elaborate plan to rob the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. The executed heist quickly got the attention of Special Agent John Gibson as he zeroes in on the players. This two stories collide as Special Agent John Gibson investigates stolen money and Isidro de la Vega searches for a buried treasure.

This story of suspense and history will entertain any readers as M. Bryce Ternet describes a well thought out scheme. The Stevenson Plan has well-developed characters and the scenes placing you among the action. I enjoyed how the two stories merged and complemented each other. Recommend for those who love historical mysteries.

The Stevenson Plan A Novel of the Monterey Peninsula M Bryce Ternet 9781516930487 Books Reviews

This novel is a love letter to Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel and Big Sur -- what a delight! The author visits numerous local places in his story and infuses it with the history of Monterey. It was the perfect read -- fun story, too!
Slowly becoming addicted to this writers style. Having been to the area, the descriptive language is impeccable! Captivates like Steinbeck's, Cannery Row. Found the same intrigue as did with Basque Story!
This book is a novel, history book, and travel guide rolled into one fascinating and enjoyable reading experience. Having previously lived on the Monterey Peninsula years ago and also intending to return soon for a visit, I was thoroughly entertained from the beginning to the end. About halfway through, I realized the format of this book is in my opinion similar to that followed by James Michener great writing technique, great story, and loaded with historical and geographical facts. If you have ever visited or intend to visit the Monterey Peninsula, I believe you will enjoy this book. If you have never visited the Monterey Peninsula, I believe you will want to go there after reading this book.
I loved this book! Not only because I was born and raised in Monterey, still here so enjoyed so much relating to the area, guessing what restaurant he is talking about, etc...and most of all so well written. It flowed so perfectly and kept you engrossed in every aspect. I could not put this down and did not want it to end! I will read it again in time. I have since purchased three other books of his. Highly recommend.
A well detailed novel that pulls the reader into two mysteries. The author, M. Bryce Ternet, does a wonderful job of providing details and information into this book. He really brings the locations and the characters to life with this book. I found that I was pulled in even with the lengthy detailed chapters and I just wanted to find out the who and what that was taking place. I really liked how well he started the main five characters off with just numbers and provided great details to their backgrounds and personal thought. He even made sure to provide details to the lowest person on the list of characters making each one real and easy to understand. The author does a wonderful job of bouncing from one era to the other and it was really easy to follow along what was going on. I really had to finish this book to find the answers.
The Stevenson Plan, A Novel of the Monterey Peninsula by M. Bryce Ternet is really a combination of two interesting stories. One is a complicated bank heist and the other is about a chest of gold and treasure, taking place in the year of 1818. The author does a good job of blending these two disparate stories together, building an interesting and intriguing story along the way. FBI Agent John Gibson is on the case again, as only he can be, to try and track down the bad guys. The opening scenes are exciting as a heist is being planned, and details how exactly it is to go down. The writing style is crisp and well executed, setting the tone for the rest of the book. Not knowing much about the Monterey Peninsula, it was interesting to learn more about this area and it's background. This is a multi-layered rather complex book that takes a while to get into, but once you do you won't regret one minute. Strongly recommend for an enticing and exciting story.
