A history of Japanese mathematics David Eugene Smith Yoshio Mikami 9781177686525 Books Reviews
This is a reprint of barely remembered book printed in 1913. It was probably the first to explain to Westerners the history of maths in Japan. Somewhat abbreviated perhaps. You can see how algebra and geometry developed in Japan. With speculation on how calculus from Europe might have influenced 17th century maths manuscripts. While later years brought advances in infinite series and sums.
The book may cause some readers to wonder if there have been other, more comprehensive discussions of Japanese maths.
This review applies to the original book published in 1914 not the reprint or Print-on-Demand or facsimile book. It is a hardcover book printed in 1914 by W. Drugulin, Leipzig by the Open Court Publishing Company of Chicago. It contains numerous charts and tables and black and white illustrations. The co-author Yoshio Mikami (三上 義夫 Mikami Yoshio (1875 – 1950) was a Japanese mathematician and wasan historian. At the Imperial University of Tokyo he studied history of Japanese and Chinese mathematics. In 1913, he published "The Development of Mathematics in China and Japan" in Leipzig. Yoshio Mikami joined with Smith to give Europeans and Western the nature of mathematics and wasan that was indigenous to Japan.
